The services ecosystems perform are so constant that we forget they are being done at all.
Forests absorb rainfall, slow floodwaters and release clean water downstream. Wetlands filter pollutants and absorb storm surges. Coral reefs and mangroves protect coastlines from waves. Soils, alive with microbes, recycle nutrients that feed every crop we grow. Pollinators — bees, birds, bats — fertilize a large share of the food we eat.
Economists have tried to price these services, and the numbers are staggering — trillions of dollars a year, by most estimates. Yet none of it appears on any balance sheet, because nobody invoices us for a service nature performs on its own.
The infrastructure comparison

A city that relies on a forested watershed for its drinking water faces a choice: maintain the forest, or build a water treatment plant to do what the forest does. The result is evidence — concrete, measurable evidence — that a degraded ecosystem costs real money, and a restored one pays returns.
This is shifting the conversation from sentiment to accounting. It is harder to dismiss a forest as unproductive when the numbers show what it contributes to the region’s water and climate.
The restoration opportunity
If the decline of ecosystems has been the bad news, the good news is that restoration is increasingly proven and increasingly profitable.
Reforestation projects are not just planting trees; they are restoring watersheds and improving yields downstream. Mangrove restoration is being financed by coastal cities as flood protection. Soil restoration programs are being adopted by farmers because they cut input costs and raise output.

City trees cool streets and absorb stormwater. Urban parks support mental health and filter the air. Green spaces reduce the heat that kills more people than storms in some regions. These are not aesthetic extras; they are climate infrastructure, working for every resident who never thinks about them.
